I remember the confusion back in 1989 or 1990 when many kosher consumers stopped drinking Coca Cola, until the OU certified it as kosher beginning in 1991. But long before then, there was a time when it's kosher status was even less certain. In a fascinating article published in Rav Chesed, the recent festschrift in honor of R. Haskel Lookstein, R. Adam Mintz explains the kosher developments based on the archival records of R. Tuvia Geffen, a rabbi from Atlanta who certified Coca Cola for decades.
