Mussar Kallah III
Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, CA
RESERVE THE DATE!! – May 8, 2005 / 29 Nissan 5765
An extraordinary gathering will take place on May 8 that will bring together some of the most highly regarded teachers of the little-known but ancient Jewish spiritual tradition called Mussar. This will be the third gathering of this type, New York and Houston having hosted Mussar Kallah I in 2003 and Mussar Kallah II in 2004.
Mussar has only existed in the world of Orthodox Judaism, but even there, the ravages of the Holocaust resulted in the living heirs to a millennium of spiritual exploration and innovation being swept from the face of the earth. The embers of Mussar have continued to glow, however, and this tradition is being rediscovered today in response to the spiritual yearning that is arising in every corner of the Jewish world.
WHO IS COMING TO THE SAN FRANCISCO JCC ON MAY 8th?
Teachers presenting workshops and leading discussions at Mussar Kallah III include:
* Rabbi Ephraim Baer of Ohr Somayach, Monsey, NY
* Rabbi Ephraim Becker from Israel, who led the on-line course "Mussar-psych" for Torah.org
* Rabbi Micha Berger, founder of the AishDas Society
* Rabbi Yosef Blau, Mussar supervisor for Yeshiva University
* Rabbi Hillel Goldberg, author of several books on Mussar and R’ Yisrael Salanter
* Rabbi Dr. Meir Levin, author of “Novarodok”
* Rabbi Zvi Miller from Israel, translator of Rabbi Salanter’s “Ohr Yisrael”
* Dr. Alan Morinis, author of "Climbing Jacob's Ladder"

WHAT LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE DO I NEED TO HAVE?
No prior knowledge of Mussar is required. Every speaker will be focusing on issues that affect ordinary people in everyday life, because that is precisely what Mussar is meant to do. In bringing forward the teachings from this venerable tradition, the presenters will be creating bridges that will permit members of our generation to access and apply these time-tested gifts of tradition in our own lives.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO LEARN?
The Mussar Kallah provides a unique opportunity to learn from seasoned teachers who are ordinarily inaccessible and yet who are bearers of one of the finest traditions of spirituality in the Jewish world. Rabbis Becker and Miller are American-born and so understand and can communicate with a contemporary audience, but they all live in Israel and so are seldom available.
Every participant will come away from Mussar Kallah III with:
* a deeper knowledge of the history of Jewish spiritual practice
* more clarity and appreciation for the wisdom of the Mussar tradition
* better understanding of the play of forces in his or her own inner life
* effective tools to apply that to help navigate the journey to holiness in the Mussar way
Fee for the day is $65 and includes a kosher lunch.
